🎬 The Philly Goat Project Grief Walk

Hi Reader,

In the U.S., we don’t really want to talk about death, and we are certainly not great at dealing with grief. After a profound loss of a loved one, we are expected to get back to work, get back to “normal” after a couple of weeks. Americans are taught to get “over it,” rather than carry our loss with us, processing it and holding it in a place of honor.

The Philly Goat Project Grief Walk is a unique invitation for people to come together, to be with other grievers (and goats in a beautiful setting), to make space and time for the grief that we feel. It’s a wonderful community of people that I am better for having met. And those goats! I was happy to walk amongst this herd of loving, affectionate creatures.

I’m thrilled to share this full-length feature about Philly Goat Project’s Grief Walk and Grief Garden. It features gorgeous cinematography by director of photography Phil Bradshaw, whose camera beautifully embraces the power of nature to play a healing role in our lives.

“Somehow it makes it easier to be human, to be around goats,” says Angel Hogan, a writer who volunteers with the Philly Goat Project. After watching this film, I am almost certain you will agree.

All my best,
Glenn Holsten

Recovery Diaries

Getting an email from us each week won’t change the world; but our mental health writers and documentary film subjects ARE changing the world. How? Through vulnerable and beautiful personal essays and professionally-produced documentary films; all showing the possibilities of mental health recovery. So, can an email update change the world? No; but it will brighten your day and, by sharing meaningful stories with someone you know, you help give our writers a voice; and THAT can change the world.

Hi Reader, Disclosing depression may seem easy. After all, scarcely a day goes by when this celebrity or that one “comes out” as living with depression, or anxiety (two of the socially “acceptable” mental health diagnoses) but, for many people, talking openly about their mental health challenges, whatever those are, isn’t easy; it can be excruciating, and the very thought of being out in the open as someone living with mental illness can be incredibly, well, anxiety-provoking. Miriam...

Hi Reader, A film is a snapshot in time. When we first met this extraordinary young woman, it was eight years ago. Back then, she was Lilah James, an extraordinarily talented fashion and conceptual designer creating a bold, beautiful collection for her final project, "Anxiety Descending." Each look represented a different facet or symptom of her CPTSD diagnosis and she and her work are beautifully represented in our film about her, Recovery on the Runway | PTSD, Mental Health & Fashion. So...

Hi Reader, Melanie du Preez asks herself, in her beautiful new essay on our site, "How on Earth does a psychologist miss neurodiversity in themselves?" Indeed, Melanie lives with autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and has lived with it, and its sometimes extremely challenging symptoms, all her life but, as she also says, "turns out that masking is one hell of a drug." And that's the cold, hard truth about walking around every inexorable minute of every exhausting day while...
